This two-day course is designed to prepare students for the river portion of a
packraft trip and does not involve a hiking or backpacking component. The majority of this two-day
course will be spent outside as we practice skills on the river. The course does involve swimming in the
river in wetsuits or dry suits. The first day will begin with a classroom session to introduce the
concept of packrafting and gear review. Following some lake practice, the class continues at the river to explore river navigation skills and camping skills along the river. Day 2 is spent expanding navigation skills and working on rescue skills. Throughout both days the course covers Leave No Trace topics.
The main venue for this course, the Flathead River, has very cold glacial water, small class I-II rapids and
lots of current; making it an ideal place for mastering river navigation and basic packraft skills. Packrafting, by nature, demands a specific set of skills and river-running strategies. The Flathead River is an excellent resource as an introduction to river navigation.
This course introduces a broad range of topics including to the student: Leave No Trace, Environmental
Concerns, Equipment, Principles of River Safety and Rescue, Self-Rescue, River Reading, Basic Paddle
Strokes, Basic Boating Maneuvers, and Trip Planning. The class will briefly touch on higher levels skills
such as Group Rescue, River Running and Wilderness Considerations for Packrafting. In addition to
learning fundamental skills, the focus will be on the importance of good decision-making, personal judgment and group responsibility in all river situations.
Classes meet at Great Northern Whitewater Rafting and Resort in West Glacier.
