Montana began in a Civil War-era struggle for millions in gold when ruffians ruled and murder was tolerated, except by the Vigilantes of Montana, who brought peace to the fledgling Territory but remained controversial: Were they the good guys or the bad guys? Law-abiding citizens acting in self-defense? Or stranglers? Controversial to this day, Montana's 1863-1865 Vigilantes were cheered and reviled in their own time. Learn who the Vigilantes were, why they formed the Vigilance Committee and why they were never prosecuted for their acts.
