Create beautiful portraits of men, women and children using basic tools. Explore different styles from modern representational art to photo realism using both live models and photos as references.
This course will give the student basic tools for creating beautiful portraits of men, women, and children. It will explore different styles of working from modern representational art to photo realism. Students will begin working in black and white media and move to the color medium of their choice. The class will draw from live models in class and be given the opportunity to work on their own subjects during the week capturing a variety of emotions and expressions.
Goal: To give the student tools and guided experience to learn the art of portrait drawing and understanding the character and individuality of facial features from different cultures and nationalities.
Learning Objectives: To better understand the principles of drawing when it comes to faces and character expressions that can be used for fine art portraiture or costume design, animation and theater character development.

The following materials will be used to explore different drawing techniques and results during the 6 weeks of class. If you have substitute materials that will work in place of the specific ones listed below please bring them. Come prepared to take notes and draw at the first class with your drawing pad, eraser, and graphite or charcoal pencils.
18 x 24 Drawing Pad / News Print or White Drawing Bond
2- 4B or 6B Charcoal Pencils
2- 4B or 6B Graphite Pencils OR….1- Woodless Graphite Pencil 6B
1- Kneaded Eraser
1- Stick of Compressed Charcoal or vine charcoal
1- Chamois
1- Colored Pencil set, Recommended - Prismacolor 12, 24, or 36 count tin
1-roll of masking tape or 2 large drawing clips

Steven Miller
Steve has 35 years of teaching and professional fashion illustration experience. He is currently an Adjunct Associate Professor at The School of Art Institute of Chicago and has been teaching there since 1991. Primarily working for major retailers such as Nordstrom, Bullocks, and Dillard's department store, his work has been represented by various galleries and is in numerous private and corporate collections. He has maintained a fashion studio in Chicago working for designers, retailers and manufacturers. Steve works in all major mediums and has been published by Laurence King Publishing, London UK.
